Porters Open for School Holidays!

The temps have dropped! We’ve taken a turn back to winter as a polar East/South-east system smacks into the South Island bringing snow to the alps. Great timing as we move towards school holidays this Friday, a top up of snow for you to come and enjoy!

It’s been a couple of weeks of warm spring conditions, with some great settled weather falling on the weekends making for some awesome days on the hill. This past weekend, we had two annual events that both proved to be a lot of fun. The Dynastar CHILL Gromfest took place on Saturday with youngsters from 6 to 15 years taking advantage of this free event, with racing and slope-style sections. It was great to see that there are so many talented youngsters coming through the ranks, we look forward to seeing them show their stuff in years to come.

On Sunday, we cranked up the BBQ and got our finest German threads out of the closet to celebrate our German an Austrian heritage. All about fun, sun, good food and fun skiing, Oktoberfest is a chance for all to unwind in the mountains and enjoy the spring conditions. 2010 season passes were up for grabs this year for members of the public who made the effort to dress up in German attire. This years winner, country miles ahead of the competition with his authentic Lederhosen was Michael Webber, just a ‘wee fella’ but getting into the spirit of Oktoberfest, and winning himself a 2010 season pass. Well done Michael! We look forward to seeing more of you in costume next year and in the draw to win a pass yourself!

Strange looking skis at Oktoberfest, and a strange looking Frenchman all the same!

You can check out the action from up the mountain through our video gallery with a video posted from each day.

From the Mountain

The snow is falling, and more to come! We’ve received around 10cm of fresh, light winter snow in the past 18 hours or so, and there’s more in the forecast. We’re expecting further snow to fall this afternoon and overnight Thursday, with the same thing forecast for Sunday night to Monday morning. It’s just what we needed to refresh the snowpack after the great spring turns we’ve been enjoying, and it allows us to remain open into the school holidays for more fun on the snow.

The weather is looking good for the weekend. Saturday will see snow showers clearing with light and variable winds, could be a good powder day! For Sunday, light winds once again, with the possibility of some patchy cloud, more likely around the main divide.
