Porters Ski Area is looking for a suitably skilled machine operator to join the operations team based at the ski area. Proven experience operating heavy equipment is a must, especially grader and excavator. Experience in snow grooming machinery is an advantage. The successful applicant will receive training for operating a snow groomer for road clearing and may have the opportunity to gain experience grooming snow on the slopes. Experience or an aptitude for equipment maintenance and construction type work is considered an advantage. You will join a small core team of skilled and dedicated staff whose focus is on delivering safe and efficient operation of the ski area and its facilities over the winter operating season.

The role will be responsible for road maintenance and snow clearing over the winter season. Various other machinery work and basic equipment maintenance tasks will also be a part of this role. Night shifts and early morning starts will be required for road clearing to ensure that ski area is open on time for each operating day. The successful applicant needs to be comfortable working flexible work hours and to be engaged in a varied range of work tasks. This is the nature of a dynamic work environment that the mountain offers.

The primary equipment for road clearing is a Cat 130G grader. The company also owns and operates a 20T Hitachi Excavator. A snow groomer is also used for road clearing on occasions when there is significant snow accumulation.

Qualifications and Experience (desirable):


  • Hold a current class 2 licence. Tracks & Wheels endorsements
  • Grader operation
  • Excavator operation
  • Snow groomer operation
  • Experience in machine and equipment maintenance
  • Construction industry experience
  • First Aid – workplace level 1


Working on a ski area offers many unique experiences and rewards with no work day the same. The mountain environment can be challenging at times and suits someone with a “can do” attitude who appreciates working in the outdoors. Porters Ski Area is a growing company, showing commitment to its improvement and development in recent years with installation of a new Doppelmayr fixed quad chair, extensive earthworks and snowmaking system and power distribution upgrade. This summer, Porters began the year-round operation of Porters Lodge, an accommodation and café business, and have also constructed a purpose-built mountain bike trail for use by lodge customers.

This position would have varied hours of work with minimum hours per fortnight and rate of pay negotiated with applicant commensurate with skills and experience. The work contract would commence in early June through to early October 2018.
