It has been such a good season for Porters in so many ways! We were delighted to get underway so early and now as we close, we can reflect on the winter with some relief and thankfulness.
It was a big season. In fact, this was a record-breaking year for us - the total number of customers in 2015 was the highest ever. The new Easy Rider chairlift and the accompanying changes to the lower mountain proved to be a great drawcard. Not only did many people “discover “ Porters this year, but they came back for more. The chair lifted customers quickly up the mountain meaning we rarely had big queues. Luckily the initial good snow cover, and all the little top-ups along the way, meant people could spread out over the hill and enjoy their favourite runs.
We would like to thank all our customers, from beginners to long-time season pass holders, for your loyalty to Porters. After the long summer installing the chairlift and making all the other changes, it has been wonderful to share our new facilities with you all. We have particularly enjoyed seeing young skiers making brilliant progress on the learners’ slopes. The schools programme has also been very successful this season, with one highlight being the two schools races with primary-aged ski race teams from all over Canterbury competing.
It was an honour to have The Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Bill English here at Porters to open the chairlift. We enjoyed talking with him and showing him around the mountain.
Recently we hosted some original Porters shareholders, who were company directors over 30 years ago – it was a rewarding experience to be able to take them up in the chair lift and show them how their early foresight and hard work has contributed to the ski area we all enjoy today.
Well, this time always comes around when the skis and boards are hung up in the garage and the boots stored away for next year. We hope you have had a brilliant season on our mountain.
Our staff will take a well-earned break this summer - some will head overseas for another winter, others will be grabbing the fishing rods, mountain bikes and surfboards for a summer with friends and family. After mopping-up from this season before Christmas, we will be back on deck in early February doing the usual summer maintenance and lead-up for the 2016 season.
We wish all of you a wonderful summer and happy travels to any of you heading to the northern hemisphere to follow the snow! All the best until we see you again: mid-June next year!
Best wishes, from Uli and all the Team at Porters
