Not skied or snowboarded before? Don't worry! We've compiled a list of hints and tips for first-timers to help your day run smoothly.
Before you arrive
Before you leave home, check out our Snow Report. This will give you an update on weather and snow conditions, as well as the condition of the road. At times, snow chains are required on your vehicle; on those days we offer a shuttle service from our access road, otherwise, you can drive straight up the mountain to our top car park, right by the lifts.
If this is your first-time skiing, we recommend you enter our 10.30am lesson. We don't take any pre-bookings for this lesson, so we advise arriving at least an hour before the lesson starts to get booked in.
Here are some tips before you leave:
It's important to stay warm in the mountains. Wear lots of loose, warm layers so you can add or remove any as the day goes on.
Sunglasses / Goggles
Good quality sunglasses or goggles are important to protect your eyes from the sun, wind and cold. You can buy or hire goggles from Guest Services when you get here.
Gloves / Mittens
Protect your hands with warm and waterproof gloves or mittens. Both are available to buy in our shop if you forget yours!
We always recommend the use of helmets, even for beginners. You can buy a helmet in our shop, or we have them available to hire for the day.
Why not make a weekend of it and spend a night or two at the Porters Lodge? With a hot fire, a menu stacked with delicious meals and comfortable beds, it's the perfect way to relax after a fun day on the snow!
If you take the shuttle up the mountain, we have lockers available for you to store all your personal belongings ($5 to hire)
When you get to Porters
The Porters turn-off is clearly signposted off State Highway 73 (view this map for location and directions). Follow the Porters access road all the way to the top carpark (approx. 9km). It's an easy mountain road and our car park is right by the lifts and Guest Services. If chains are required, stop in the chain-fitting area (clearly signposted, approx. 4km from the main road) and either fit chains to your vehicle or hop-on the shuttle bus (check times and details here).
1. Buy tickets and book lessons
Our Guest Services team will be able to book everything you need for your day on the snow. They'll organise your lesson, your rental equipment and you can buy gloves, scarves and hats if you've forgotten anything!
We have a first-time package that is a great introduction to skiing and snowboarding and is the most cost-effective way to get moving on the snow with ease. The package includes a pass to the beginners' area, a two-hour group lesson and your ski or snowboard hire.

2. Pick up your rental equipment
Just next door to Guest Services is our rental department. They'll fit you out with skis (or snowboard), boots and poles. If you've hired a helmet or outer clothing from us, you'll pick these up here too.
3. Meet your instructor
Your two-hour group lesson will take part in the beginners' area. Once you've collected your skis, just head to the other end of the car park and you'll meet our instructors by the beginners' flag. We have separate lessons for adults and children; the instructors will organise you into your groups at 10.30am and 1.30pm. You can add a second lesson for just $20 (just call into Guest Services to arrange), or you can spend the afternoon free-skiing in the beginners' area. The lifts close at 4pm, so you have plenty of time to practice!
4. Relax and refuel in the café
The café is a great place to sit back and rest, and get ready to practice your newly learnt skills during the afternoon! We have hot drinks, soft drinks and alcohol available and a menu full of warming meals and snacks to keep you going. We also have a PLUS pass option that gives you a hot lunch, snacks, and unlimited tea and coffee throughout the day for just $20 weekdays ($30 on weekends).
The best way to progress and to continue having fun is to take the next level lesson with our instructors, and keep practising! We run Level 2 and 3 lessons every weekend and during the school holidays at 1.30pm.
We hope to see you again soon!
The Porters Lodge is open all year with a lunch, snack and dinner menu, a fully licenced bar, sun deck and accommodation for everyone to enjoy after a day in the mountains.
