Excitement mixed with relief last Friday, when the Porters operations crew welcomed the arrival on the mountain of new tower snow guns, the main players in our new automated snow-making infrastructure.
The Porters team has been very busy over the summer months, completely re-building and installing the site specific, state-of-the-art SMI automated snow-making system. The introduction of the seven new SMI Super-Puma tower snow guns will produce 20-30% more snow than previous models.
The addition of a VFD drive to the snow-making pump will increase the water flow rate to the system by 20%. The arrival of the guns culminates many months of planning and research, earthworks and hard graft, to ensure the guns can be located strategically and effectively on the lower slopes of the mountain.
All these features combine to the fully automated system which will maximise snow production, particularly in marginal temperatures.
“The improved efficiency of the new system will mean Porters can make more snow, faster, and, more often,” commented Operations Manager, Luke Armstrong, “ it is great to see the tower guns up here in plenty of time for the optimal snow-making weeks pre-season.”
Porters Ski area will open on June 20th this year.
